How Does Solar Module Weight per Square Meter Affect Low-Load Roof Selection?

For a commercial or industrial roof with limited load capacity, module weight should not be compared only in kilograms per module. Modules cover different areas, so weight per square meter—also called surface density—provides a more direct comparison of module-related distributed loading. However, surface density is only one project input. It is not the total photovoltaic system load and cannot by itself confirm that a roof is suitable for solar.

What is module surface density?

Module surface density is normally expressed in kg/m². It represents module weight distributed across module area and supports an initial comparison between modules of similar power or different construction. A roof project must also consider fixing structures, rails, cables, construction and maintenance loads, plus environmental actions such as wind and snow.

Weight comparison of the two XSFM-560-T2 modules

The X-SOLAR frameless flexible XSFM-560-T2 is a 560W N-TOPCon module measuring 2260 × 1200 × 2.7 mm. It weighs 8.4 kg and has a surface density of 3.1 kg/m², with a minimum bending radius of 0.5 m. It may conform to a suitable curved roof during installation, but it is not intended for repeated or cyclic bending.

The framed lightweight XSFM-560-T2 is also a 560W N-TOPCon module. It measures 2260 × 1245 × 25 mm, weighs 13.5 kg and has a surface density of 4.8 kg/m². Conventional rails with single or double clamps may be evaluated for applicable projects.

Is the lower surface density always the better choice?

No. The frameless flexible module has a lower module surface density, but final selection also depends on roof curvature, substrate condition, permitted fixing method, construction access, drainage, waterproofing and wind requirements. On a flat or low-slope roof suitable for conventional rails, the framed lightweight module may better match the project’s structural and installation approach.

Why is module weight alone insufficient for roof safety?

The module is only one part of a rooftop photovoltaic system. Project assessment should also include the fixing system and other equipment, existing roof condition, allowable structural loading, local load distribution, building height, roof edge and corner wind effects, snow, construction access and maintenance requirements. Final structural conclusions should be made by qualified project professionals.

What information should be prepared for selection?

Useful inputs include roof type and substrate, usable area, slope or curvature, allowable structural loading information, site photographs, local wind and snow conditions, permission for roof penetrations, drainage and waterproofing constraints, target system capacity and delivery location. A non-penetrating adhesive approach may be considered only for applicable projects after reviewing substrate compatibility, surface condition and engineering requirements.
