Can a Low-Load Commercial Roof Support Solar? A Practical Decision Framework

The answer cannot be determined only by calling a roof “low-load” or a module “lightweight.” Lightweight modules reduce module-related loading, but solar feasibility still requires a project-specific review of allowable structural loading, roof condition, wind, drainage, waterproofing, fixing design and applicable local requirements.

Step 1: Confirm the current roof condition

Record the roof type, substrate, age, corrosion or deterioration, existing leaks and repaired areas. Roof condition affects service planning, fixing selection, construction sequence and waterproofing decisions.

Step 2: Obtain structural and environmental inputs

Allowable structural loading is an important input, but it should not be used alone.
